Mijk van Dijk... | Producer since 1988 |
Live Act since 1990 | |
DJ since 1992 |
1980:
Starts in music as a bass player in several funk and pop bands before
getting interested in drumcomputers and synthesizers.
1986:
Starts working with music computers and drummachines.
1988:
Produces House and Hip Hop tracks.
1990:
first LoopZone -12" on Low Spirit Records Berlin ("Hate / Les
Enfants Du Paradis"). First live act performances.
1991:
Several hard techno-12"'s with DJ Tanith and again as
LoopZone on Bash Records Berlin. More live act performances.
1992:
New projects Microglobe ("High On Hope") and Mindgear ("Don't
Panic") on MFS-Records Berlin. Works together with Cosmic Baby on the
first Trance compilation ever: "Tranceformed From Beyond" (MFS), a
75-minutes-non-stop-music-mix. Starts to perform as a DJ besides his
successful live acts.
1993:
New projects Marmion ("Berlin-EP" incl. "Schöneberg") with DJ
Marcos Lopez and Mijk's Magic Marble Box ( "The 4 Seasons Of The
Mind-EP") on Superstition Records Hamburg.
1994:
Several big clubhits with Marmion ("Schöneberg-Remix" and
"Firechild") and Microglobe ("Environ-Mentality", "All Our Colours"
incl. video). Coproduces two tracks for the DJ Hell-album "Geteert
Und Gefedert" on Disko B Munich. Meanwhile Mijk plays a lot of live
shows and DJ sets all over Europe.
First tour to Australia in May. First album is released through
MFS: "Afreuropamericasiaustralica". The almost unspeakable name of
this concept album refers to the 6 continents (yes, don't forget
Antarctica...) and Mijk's view of the world as he knows it... First
tour to Japan from December '94 to January '95.
1995:
Several remixes, many gigs and the 2nd Mijk's Magic Marble Box (
"Tokyo Trax"), a reflection of Mijk's first Japan tour.
1996:
Marmion is back with new tracks ("Three After Midnight", "The
Spark, The Flame And The Fire") and their classic "Schöneberg", which
is remixed and re-released in the UK through Hooj Choons. Another
Mijk-classic "The Wildlife" gets new attention as the TV comercial
soundtrack for French car Renault Mégane. Mijk does remixes for
Japanese acts Denki Groove and Parts Of Console and finally releases
his first 12" under his name Mijk van Dijk: "Suck My Soul". 2nd tour
to Australia and 3rd tour to Japan. Always interested in new forms of
making or performing music, Mijk performs a live set on his birthday
party at E-Werk Berlin with nothing else but a Sony Playstation video
game console running the "music game" CD-Rom "Depth", ("Fluid" in
Europe). Mijk's occasional Playstation performances in clubs or in
radio shows already gained a lot of attention so far.
1997:
Mijk's 2nd album "glow" released on Superstition sells more than
10.000 copies. The 3rd single of the "glow"-album "More" comes with a
3D-video. Mijk produces soundtracks for the movies "Kiss My Blood" by
David Jazay and "Femme" by Charles Finkbeiner and Donald
Krämer. Produces soundtrack music for the Sony Playstation game "Ghost
In The Shell". In his first theatre work Mijk and the "Berliner
Ensemble" (founded by Bertold Brecht) take the stage out of the
theatre and out on the street on a truck of the Love Parade, to mix
theatre with Techno and Drum'n'Bass. Again Mijk's musical tool for the
musical soundtrack to the theatre performance is the notorious
Playstation.
1998:
is the year of cooperations: due to Mijk's success in Japan, Sony
Japan re-releases "glow" and the DJ-mix-CD "Multi Mijk" by DJ Toby
Izui, a kind of "Best of" Mijk's early works from '92 to '96. Mijk's
very own first DJ-Mix-CD is released in association with German major
Motor/Polydor on Superstition's sublabel Push as "Mind Control
Vol.2". Frogman Records Japan release two cooperations of Mijk with
Japanese Djs Takkyu Ishino and Toby Izui. So Mijk goes to Japan for
the 7th time in April to promote his Japanese releases. He spends the
second half of 1998 working on his next album for Superstition called
"Teamwork", a compilation of cooperations with friendly artists. The
first singles off that album are 12"s with Thomas Schumacher (Bremen)
and Claude Young (Detroit). Other artists involved in this project
are Quazar (Amsterdam) Paul M (Berlin), Humate (Hamburg), Toby Izui
(Tokyo) and Johannes Talirz (Berlin), the guy that Mijk started doing
electronic music with.
1999:
"Teamwork" is out since February 1, 1999. In spring 1999 Mijk
promoted his "Teamwork"-album with successful live shows in Europe and
Japan. Another 12" with Rob Acid entitled "Rhythmen aus dem
Bienenstock" (Rhythms From The Beehive) followed later in autumn.
2000:
Mijk finished 5 exclusive tracks for the soundtrack of the videogame
"Ridge Racer V" for the new PlayStation2, released in Japan in March
2000.
With partner Tobynation Mijk released the two EP's "Brothers In Raw:
Live At Cocolo" and "K-JIM & Y-BOT: Summer And You".
2001:
Three of Mijk's tracks for the videogame "Ridge Racer V" appeared on
vinyl as "Game Trax Vol. 1 EP", to be followed by "Game Trax Vol. 2
EP" (Armored Core 2). With Namito Mijk produced the "Härter EP".
Mijk van Dijk & Toby Izui released a Mix-CD called "Berlin Tokyo".
2002:
Mijk's new album "Everygound" is finished, due to be released in
early 2002 on Superstition Records.
It is planned that a 'Best Of' compilation will be released on a
mexican label, working title "Chrono-Logical".
There is also an Ambient Album in the pipeline...

"Mijk's got a brandnew bag. Inspired from his past as a bass player in Funk bands and fueled by today's electro sound, he created NuFunk. Now some of you might wonder what is NuFunk and what is it what NuFunk does. Mijk will explain soon: with Music.
Here is the first step: The Change, Mijk's NuFunk duo with Florian Schirmacher, the charismatic singer and co-producer of bands like Glowing Glisses, Wareika, Federleicht, Hatikvah, as well as releasing with André Galuzzi and Guido Schneider on labels such as Cadenza and Cocoon. Different from these releases, that gained him big respect from DJs and music lovers, with The Change Florian totally exhibits his funky side and shows what a great singer he is. The Change were signed by French label Space Factory Records, the label of mighty Gigolo artist David Carretta. Their first offering is "Love Devotion", a cover version of Mijk's original tune of his first Superstition release "Mijk's Magic Marble Box - The 4 Seasons Of The Mind" way back from 1993, giving you a first taste what Mijk and Florian's vision of NuFunk is about.
"Love Devotion" is being released on the new Space Factory "Catalogue" Compilation. Proper releases and remixes will follow soon."Mijk van Dijk, 20/Jun/2009 on mijkvandijk.de
"Just to let you know that Florian and Mijk chaenged their name "The Change" to "The Chaenge" to avoid confusion with US-80s-Funk-Band "Change".
Their first 12" "Love Devotion/ Tiger Map" shall soon be out on Space Factory along with amazing remixes by Einmusik from Hamburg/ Germany and Yasmin Gate from Buenos Aires/ Argentina of former Dirty Princess-fame. Also out soon on Space Factory: The Chaenge-Remix of Yasmin Gate's "No Fear".Mijk van Dijk, 06/Nov/2009 on mijkvandijk.de

"Finally here's a new release of Mijk's project Plato on Dutch label Big & Dirty. "The Ashes Of Our Dreams" shows the deeper side of Plato, with thoughtful lyrics and a great vocal performance by German singer Jette von Roth, known from her work with KayCee and Schiller.
"The Ashes Of Our Dreams" reflects what was and could have been and that we can regain what seems to be lost.
There are three Plato versions and a lot of great remixes by up-and-coming Portugese Trance producer Mossy, Hungarian Minmalist and Sound Designer Cave Sedem, mysterious Techno producer Toneking, as well Mijk's very new mijkfunk project."Mijk van Dijk, 10/May/2010 on mijkvandijk.de

DL: 04/2010 DE (BluFin Records; BF 068) ^ 06:07 Ebony 06:10 Ebony (Phunklarique Remix) 08:12 Ivory
"Mijk's 4th 12" is out on BluFin-Records from Cologne now. This is what the promo says:
The piano: endless source of inspiration for generations of musicians. Although Mijk van Dijk is known for his love of piano tracks, he has not touched the piano for years - until he invented some infectious hooks of this EP while preparing-lines for his new live performance tracks which went down like a storm during his sets.
So he decided to dedicate his 4th EP on BluFin to the piano, black and white. Ebony features a gospel-influenced upright piano groove reminiscent of great moments in house music. Ivory is the "white" version of the piano, a rocking Wurlitzer hook straight from the late 70s. While the pianos breathe the old school flavour of Mijk's best works from the past, the grinding relentless grooves are his path for future funk flavoured productions.
One of Mijk's favourite producers of 2009 provided the remix. Phunklarique lives up to his name and delivers a funky variation with a relentless groove that just won't stop."Mijk van Dijk, 17/Mar/2010 on mijkvandijk.de

"It's about time to introduce you to mijkfunk. Mijk is gonna take off to explore new ground, which is actually going back to his roots: Funk Music.
When Mijk bought his first Roland TR-505 Drum Machine back in the late 90s, he wanted to create Minneapolis Funk like Prince, The Time, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis and other influencees like Zapp, The Gap Band and Cameo. Then there came "Jack" and he was influenced by the vibe of House music. But The Funk was never forgotten and right now he is rediscovering his youth as a bass player in local North German Funk Band "Joystick" and writing song about song soon to be launched on his NuFunk label, combining Funk and Electro with the knowledge of House."Mijk van Dijk, 17/Jul/2010

DL: 11/2011 EU (nuFunkFiles; NUFF 002) ^ 05:30 Kids Want Revolution 06:47 Funkit 05:28 To The Groove 07:02 Girl Galore
mijkfunk's second release on nuFunkFiles (AKA nuFF) ties in where "Are Friends Digital?" ended: again no House nor Techno but more NuFunk from Berlin.
Written in early 2010 "Kids Want Revolution" seems like the definite description of what we see on the streets of the world these days: a young generation with a new sensation, once again expressed by the flaming voice of Jette von Roth.
While the lead track of this 4 track-EP is undeniably political, "Funkit" just preaches the get-down NuFunk sound. Dedicated to his own Funkit parties, Mijk van Dijk delivers a killer boogie bass line with a relentless drum groove. "To The Groove" just takes the same line: more NuFunk for the floor. And "Girl Galore" releases once again Mijk's passion for slow'n'sexy grooves.Mijk van Dijk, November 2011

DL: 04/2012 EU (nuFunkFiles; NUFF 003) ^ 06:37 Tool (Original Mix) 06:30 Tool (Mijkfunk Boogie Remix) 07:09 Tool (Mijkfunk Balearic Remix) 06:04 Tool (Mijkfunk Boogie Tool) 06:36 Tool (Matthew Cowley Remix)
On a hot summer day, Mijk van Dijk and long-term friend Joshua Kirkby from Sydney sat down in Mijk’s studio in Berlin and created "Tool", a slow boogie burner, that Mijk has been road-testing ever since in his NuFunk DJ sets. It was clear that this little gem had to be released on nuFunkFIles.
Their original recording is based around a funky keyboard break sitting tight on a slow and phunky 109 bpm groove. Yes, it’s really that slow, the groove is just so uplifting, it feels much faster. And yes, it’s the boys working the mic as well.
Mijk wanted to create a faster variation based on the sound of his boogie monsters "Funkit" and "To The Groove" of his "Kids Want Revolution"-EP (nuFF002) and recorded a 117 bpm corker featuring his already iconic trademark boogie bass sound. And while on it, he also pushed the variations a bit further by remixing a wonderfully relaxed Balearic version as well as a Tool Tool that lives up to the name of the track also in the purpose.
Mijk is spreading the word and sound of NuFunk in Berlin through his radio show "Motherfunk" on BLN.fm, his resident night "Funkit" at Delicious Doughnuts and his DJ sets as mijkfunk. Down under in Sydney Joshua is a missionary of the Boogie under the name DJ Box. After recruiting his local record store (SPANK Records) staffer Matthew Cowley to "do something a little different" the Matthew Cowley Remix was born. A deep Tech House melancholic dense little builder of a track – It’s a fine addition to this EP and we are proud to have Matt on board.
Despite living on opposite sides of the planet, Mijk and Joshua share their love for The Funk with the help of the social media network, celebrating every new discovery in the still young galaxy of NuFunk/ FutureBoogie/ or whatever you may wanna call it.
We hope you dig our third release on nuFunkFiles and play it, chart it, talk about it. Boogie down, funksters!

"During the making of the original album, Mijk chose to construct the tracks in a fashion that would make it easy to glue them together in the mastering studio. Remember, this was the MIDI age, when hard disk recording was still unbelievably rare and expensive. His studio was only a mere collection of old and cheap gear from the second-hand shop, MIDI-controlled by an Atari. As a result of this intensive production method, most of the original tracks on the CD album had no proper start or ending. Mijk has personally edited all tracks for this 2010 re-release to let each of them stand on their own feet."

"I'm always in a constant change
I remix and I re-arrange
and wonder if that's not too strange for you!
I constantly invent myself
I change my colors frequently
from 'Les Enfants Du Paradis' to 'Environ-Mentality'
don't panic, it's just Mijk you see
cause there is so much more in me that you'll stick with me"
(Mijk van Dijk, 'I Constantly Invent Myself')

I have also a promo CD edition in a cardboard sleeve with slightly
different artwork, but same tracks as on the release version.

There is also another promo edition of this album... Containing a
'glowing' colored bubble gum in the shape of a CD instead of the

"Unlike my first two albums this time the only concept is that
there is no concept, apart from that of two friendly producers meeting
at a specific place in space and moment in time to share their ideas
about music, life, food, games, etc. These 12 recordings are
snapshots of such situations and listening to them, is for me like
browsing through a photo album. Hope you enjoy this album as much as
I did making it!"

"Tribal Rave In Leipzig", "Grüner Tee", "Elemente in B", "Fünf Jahre & Morgen" written and produced by Mijk van Dijk & M.L.Boncoeur.

DL: 05/2013 US (PIN23 Netlabel; PIN23CD05) ^ 07:14 Mijk van Dijk: OK Oklahoma Notes by Mijk: "This is my contribution to a Charity Compilation to aid the people from Oklahoma/ USA. On the afternoon of May 20, 2013 an EF5 tornado struck Moore, Oklahoma and adjacent areas with peak winds estimated at 210 miles per hour (340 km/h), killing 23 people and injuring 377 others. The tornado was part of a larger weather system that had produced several other tornadoes over the previous two days. The EF5 is now on record as the largest Tornado in recorded history measuring 2.6 miles in width. Among the hardest hit areas were two public schools: Briarwood Elementary School and Plaza Towers Elementary School. At the latter school, 75 children and staff were present when the tornado struck. Seven children died at Plaza Towers Elementary School. Requirements for safe rooms in public schools vary from community to community across the swath of Midwestern and Southern states so accustomed to lethal twisters that it is known as Tornado Alley. In Oklahoma and in bordering states, land-use regulations are often derided as unnecessary government intrusions. State building codes do not require that schools provide safe rooms, leaving the decision to individual school districts. FEMA distributes grant money to states after major disasters to give communities an incentive to rebuild smarter and to avoid costlier disasters in the future. But support is limited, and local school districts still must come up with around a quarter of the costs for storm improvements. I have been asked by Oklahoma based Liquid Sky family member James Hawley to donate a track for a special release on his PIN23 Net Label as a fundraiser release for the Shelter Oklahoma Schools Project, which I happily agreed on. I created a dirty house track with a sweaty beat and a positive shout-out to the people from Oklahoma. Check the credits on the tracklisting and you will notice that most members of the worldwide Liquid Sky family are involved in this project with many exclusive tracks that you cannot get anywhere else but on this fine compilation. This compilation is NOT on sale on Beatport or other download stores to make sure that every cent goes to the good cause. All sales will go to Shelter Oklahoma Schools, which was created with the purpose of providing storm shelters in and around Oklahoma schools and communities. I hope this compilation will raise a few dollars, spotlight the situation in the desaster areas and encourage the people from Oklahoma, that they are not alone in this. For more information, tracklisting, previews and of course for the purchase, please visit pirateaudio.org/static.php?page=PIN23_05"
